What it does for you

Eyes on the track, not the screen.

Hear what is coming

Voice cues tell you as each waypoint comes up and when you reach it, so you do not need to look.

Know when you stray

Drift off the route and it tells you how far away it is and on which side.

Made for your pocket

It keeps guiding with the screen off, with vibrations you can tell apart by feel.

No signal needed

It keeps working out of range, so it is with you for the whole trip.

The Follow route card for the saved route Halls Gap to the Pinnacle in Dirt Map: 3.4 km and 4 checkpoints, a choice of Walk / Hike, Run, Cycle or 4WD, a voice guidance switch and an option to record the activity.
Start from any saved route, and choose how you are travelling.
Navigation Companion following the Halls Gap to the Pinnacle route in the Grampians. The banner reads Waypoint 3, 850 m ahead; along the bottom are 2.0 km to finish, the arrival time and 2 of 4 checkpoints.
The next waypoint up top, with your arrival time and progress below.
A red Off route banner saying the route is 130 m to your right, with a dashed line on the map leading back to it.
Stray from the line and it tells you which way the route is.
A card reading You’ve passed Waypoint 2: you didn’t reach it, so go back to it or skip it and carry on, with Skip and Go back buttons.
Miss a waypoint and you choose: go back for it, or skip it.

Every waypoint, in order

It works through your route’s waypoints in order, with a heads-up as each one approaches. Miss one and you can go back for it or skip it, and if you just carry on, it moves on to the next.

Told what to expect at junctions

At a real junction it tells you which way to go before you get there and what you will see — ‘Three tracks — take the middle one.’ Junction cues need the offline map for that area.

Climbs, before you reach them

When a climb is coming up, it tells you how long and how steep it is, and it tells you when you reach the top.

Any saved route, from wherever you are

Follow a route you planned in Dirt Map or one you imported. Start wherever you are and it guides you to the start, or to join the route partway along. You can record the trip at the same time.

Navigation Companion is a guide, not a substitute for a paper map, a personal locator beacon (PLB), proper trip planning or your own judgement. Conditions change and tracks close, and a saved route can be out of date. On remote trips, carry a map and a PLB.
FAQ

Common questions.

Is Navigation Companion free?
Yes. Following a saved route with Navigation Companion is part of Dirt Map at no extra cost.
Does it work with no signal?
Yes. Download the region first so junction cues and wrong-turn help work out of range. One region is free, and Pro adds more.
Can I keep my phone in my pocket?
Yes, that is what it is built for. Voice guidance is on from the start, it keeps guiding with the screen off, and waypoint alerts, off-route warnings and a missed waypoint each have their own vibration.
Can I follow a route I imported?
Yes. It follows any saved route, including routes you imported from a GPX file.
Do I have to start at the beginning of the route?
No. Start wherever you are and it guides you to the start, or to join the route partway along. Loop routes are handled too.
What if I go off route?
It tells you how far away the route is and on which side, keeps reminding you while you are off it, and tells you when you are back on it.
Which activities does it support?
Walking or hiking, running, cycling and 4WD.
How is it different from turn-by-turn navigation?
Navigation Companion follows a route you have already saved, waypoint by waypoint. Turn-by-turn navigation finds a way to a destination for you.
