What it does for you

Know the climb before you are on it.

Steep bits stand out

Your routes, trips and tracks shift from gentle to steep colours, so you can spot the hard pinches at a glance.

Routes, trips and tracks

Open a route you planned or opened from a shared link, a trip you recorded or a track on the map, and it is coloured the same way.

The road ahead, as you go

In turn-by-turn and Navigation Companion, the way ahead on the map is coloured by how steep it is.

Elevation ahead

While you navigate, a panel shows the climbs still to come, free for everyone.

Gentle to steep, in plain words

The legend uses plain words, from flat to steep, uphill and down, so you can read it at a glance. Prefer a plain line? One switch beside the legend turns the colours off.

Climbs ahead while you navigate

In turn-by-turn and Navigation Companion, Elevation ahead shows the climbs still to come, with a marker showing where you are on the climb, and the road ahead on the map is coloured by how steep it is. Both are free while you navigate or follow a route.

Best with a signal

The colours fill in when you have a signal. Out of range, stretches along the tracks and roads of regions you have downloaded are still coloured, and the rest of the line stays plain. Elevation ahead works the same way.

The full picture with Pro

Dirt Map Pro adds the elevation chart for every route, trip and track, in the same colours, so you can see where each climb starts and how long it lasts.

Steepness colours show how steep the ground is, not how hard a track will be. A gentle slope can be impassable when wet, rutted or washed out, and conditions change. Use the colours as a guide alongside your own judgement, check conditions before you go, and on remote trips carry a paper map and a personal locator beacon (PLB).
FAQ

Common questions.

Are steepness colours free?
Yes. The coloured line, the steepness of the road ahead and Elevation ahead while you navigate are all free. The elevation chart is part of Dirt Map Pro.
What gets coloured?
The route, trip or track you open: routes you plan or open from a shared link, trips you record, and the tracks you open on the map.
Do my trips keep their own colours?
Yes. Your trips keep the colours you gave them on the map. Steepness colours show on the route, trip or track you open.
Does it work with no signal?
The colours fill in when you have a signal. Out of range, stretches along the tracks and roads of regions you have downloaded are still coloured, and the rest of the line stays plain. Elevation ahead works the same way.
Does it show percentages?
No. The legend uses plain words: steep down, down, flat, up and steep up.
Can I turn the colours off?
Yes. One switch, right beside the legend, turns them off and back on for every line.
What is Elevation ahead?
A panel that shows the climbs still to come while you navigate with turn-by-turn or follow a route with Navigation Companion. It is free for everyone.
Does a steep colour mean a track is hard?
Not on its own. The colours show how steep the ground is; surface, weather and recent damage decide how hard it really is.
