STEP 01

Install the app

Dirt Map is an iPhone and iPad app and needs iOS 15.0 or later. It is free, and it does not ask you to create an account before you can use it.

STEP 02

Download your region on wifi

Your first region is already built in. Everything else downloads from inside the app — open the map menu, choose Download Maps, and pick your region. Packs run from 107 MB (Tasmania) to 615 MB (Queensland), so do it before you leave the house.

Coverage

Every state and territory, sized honestly.

Each pack contains the basemap, contour lines, the offline routing graph and the track database for that region. These are the real file sizes, read straight from the same manifest the app downloads from.

The finer 20 m contours are a Pro feature and stream separately — they need signal to load and are not part of the offline pack.

Before you leave

A two-minute checklist.

  1. Download the region — or regions — you will be driving in, on wifi.
  2. Open the map once with the phone in airplane mode to confirm it renders offline.
  3. Plan and save your route while you still have reception, so it is on the phone.
  4. Tell someone where you are going. Dirt Map is a guide, not a substitute for telling a human your plans.

Download it before the driveway.

A map you meant to download is worth exactly as much as no map at all.
