Get Dirt Map, then get your maps.
Two steps, and the second one is the important one — download your region while you still have wifi.
Install the app
Dirt Map is an iPhone and iPad app and needs iOS 15.0 or later. It is free, and it does not ask you to create an account before you can use it.
Download your region on wifi
Your first region is already built in. Everything else downloads from inside the app — open the map menu, choose Download Maps, and pick your region. Packs run from 107 MB (Tasmania) to 615 MB (Queensland), so do it before you leave the house.
Every state and territory, sized honestly.
Each pack contains the basemap, contour lines, the offline routing graph and the track database for that region. These are the real file sizes, read straight from the same manifest the app downloads from.
| Region | Offline map size | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Victoria | 474 MB | Free — already in the app |
| New South Wales | 350 MB | Pro — download in-app |
| Queensland | 615 MB | Pro — download in-app |
| South Australia | 222 MB | Pro — download in-app |
| Western Australia | 488 MB | Pro — download in-app |
| Northern Territory | 184 MB | Pro — download in-app |
| Tasmania | 107 MB | Pro — download in-app |
| North Island | 344 MB | Pro — download in-app |
| South Island | 303 MB | Pro — download in-app |
The finer 20 m contours are a Pro feature and stream separately — they need signal to load and are not part of the offline pack.
A two-minute checklist.
- Download the region — or regions — you will be driving in, on wifi.
- Open the map once with the phone in airplane mode to confirm it renders offline.
- Plan and save your route while you still have reception, so it is on the phone.
- Tell someone where you are going. Dirt Map is a guide, not a substitute for telling a human your plans.
Download it before the driveway.
A map you meant to download is worth exactly as much as no map at all.
