What it does for you

Peace of mind for the people at home.

Family follow along

Send one link and they can see where you are and where you have been, on a map in their web browser.

Nothing for them to install

No app, no account and no sign-in. If they can open a link, they can follow your trip.

You stay in control

Choose how often it updates and when it ends, and stop sharing whenever you like.

Copes with patchy signal

When coverage drops out, your trail catches up once you are back in range, and your last known spot stays on the map.

Screens

See it in action.

The Beacon screen in Dirt Map: Share your location with a Beacon, explaining that you get a code and a link to share, that the people you share with follow you on a live map with no app or account, and that starting a beacon is a Pro feature.
Start a beacon and you get a code and a link to send.
Beacon’s update choices: Real time, every 15 or 30 minutes, every hour, or every 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 km.
Choose how often it updates: live, on a timer, or by distance.
Beacon’s finish choices: When I stop it, After a duration, or After a distance.
And choose when it ends.
The web page a shared beacon opens: the trip’s name and when it last updated, a map with the trail along a 4WD track, and a timeline beside it: stopped since 12:56, moved 8.8 km, and stopped for 1 h 10 min before that.
What the people you share with see, in any browser: your position, your trail and a timeline. No app or sign-in.

For everyday trips

Plenty of walks and drives are a few hours out, or somewhere the signal comes and goes, and you would still like someone at home to know where you are. Beacon is for those trips: a light way to keep family in the loop with the phone already in your pocket.

What the people at home see

A map with your latest position, the trail of where you have been, and how long ago it last updated. If you drop out of coverage, the map keeps your last known spot and when it was recorded, so they always have somewhere to start.

Made for patchy coverage

Beacon needs mobile coverage to send an update, so it is not an offline feature. When the signal comes and goes, it catches up as soon as you are back in range, so your trail fills in rather than leaving a gap.

It won’t stay on by accident

Beacon keeps sharing until you stop it or it reaches the end you chose, and Dirt Map reminds you while a beacon is still on, so you do not forget it is running.

Beacon is a convenience, not a safety device. It needs mobile coverage to send an update and is not a substitute for a personal locator beacon (PLB), a satellite messenger, proper trip planning or a paper map. Conditions change and tracks close. For remote or serious trips, carry a PLB.
FAQ

Common questions.

Is Beacon free?
Starting a beacon is part of Dirt Map Pro. Watching one is free: the people you share with need nothing but the link.
Do the people watching need the app?
No. The link opens in any web browser, with no app and no account.
Does Beacon work offline?
No. Beacon needs mobile coverage to update. On patchy signal it catches up when you are back in range, and where there is no signal your last known location stays on the map.
Is Beacon a replacement for a PLB or EPIRB?
No. Beacon is a way to share your location with family and mates, not an emergency device. For remote or multi-day trips, carry a personal locator beacon or a satellite messenger.
How often does it update?
You choose: in real time, every 15 or 30 minutes, every hour, or each time you have travelled a set distance.
How do I stop sharing?
Stop it whenever you like, or set it to end after a time or a distance. Dirt Map reminds you while a beacon is still on.
Can I share with more than one person?
Yes. Anyone you send the link to can follow along, so share it with as many family and mates as you like.
What if I lose signal partway through?
Beacon catches up when you are back in range, so your trail fills in. Until then, your last known spot stays on the map.
